Suicide prevention, awareness event Saturday, April 15

The Sherrard and Rockridge FFA and Gray Matters chapters will host the fourth annual The Mom Friend Project suicide prevention and awareness fundraiser from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at Rockridge.

The event will feature a speaker, games, bags, kids’ crafts, a silent auction and more. Food from Chick-Fil-A and Culver’s will be available for purchase.

Event proceeds will be split between the two schools and used to support suicide awareness and prevention, according to a news release

“Agriculture has one of the worst suicide rates, so I think for the FFA to do it, it shows we do support both the awareness and prevention of suicide by students and people involved with agriculture, but the whole concept of mental health for them,” said Sherrard FFA President and senior Levy Schurr, in the release. “We want to show people we do support them. We are here to talk.”

Freshman and FFA Historian Hannah Schmidt said, “I think everybody should be recognized for what they’re going through; everybody should be treated like they’re amazing because they are.”

The Mom Friend Project began as a way to raise awareness for teen suicide following the tragic loss of Sherrard junior Alyn Hall in fall 2018, the release states.
