SSAB appoints Tom Cox head of Americas Operations

    STOCKHOLM — SSAB announced Wednesday, Dec. 17, the appointment of Tom Cox as head of SSAB Americas and a member of the SSAB Group Executive Committee, effective Feb. 1, 2026.

    Mr. Cox is currently the general manager of SSAB Iowa, where he has worked for 24 years, overseeing Safety, Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering teams at the Montpelier plant, located outside Muscatine, Iowa.

    “With over two decades at SSAB, Tom Cox has developed a unique expertise spanning the entire value chain,” said Johnny Sjöström, president and CEO of SSAB. “His leadership has been instrumental in advancing fossil-free steel in the U.S. and strengthening SSAB Americas’ market position.”

    SSAB is a global market leader in steel production with corporate headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden, and two divisions located in North America – the Americas division (steel mill and R&D facility in Montpelier; and three cut-to-length facilities in Houston, Texas). SSAB has approximately 14,500 employees in more than 50 countries with production facilities located in Sweden, Finland and the U.S.

    Mr. Cox has held various roles at SSAB Americas, including Technical Services, Continuous Improvement, and operations management for Rolling, Finishing and Shipping. He led the SSAB Iowa team to records in safety, production, product quality, and customer experience recognition.

    He holds a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering from Iowa State University and a MBA from St. Ambrose University.

    Mr. Cox succeeds Chuck Schmitt, who previously announced his retirement.
