Rooting Out Poverty Conference

Registration is now open for Project NOW and Community Action’s second annual Rooting Out Poverty conference on Thursday,  April 18 at Rhythm City Casino Resort, Davenport.

The theme for the day-long event is “Empower, Engage, Eradicate: Rooting Out Poverty Together in 2024.” Attendees can sign up here beginning today, March 18, for all three sessions. They are expected to delve into housing, education, economic, health care and justice through a poverty lens. 

Tickets are $45 per person and include breakfast and lunch.

Breakfast, lunch included

The daylong sessions will kick off with check-in and a continental breakfast from 8-9 a.m. for the event, which also will feature a plated lunch. Adjournment is set for 3 p.m.

The panel discussion includes:

  • Unlocking Potential – Unleashing Possibilities: Ending Permanent Punishments, Creating a More Just Society, and Safer Communities. Speakers: The Rev. Ciera Bates-Chamberlain, Live Free; Harry Pena, The Illinois Coalition to End Permanent Punishments; and Shimere Love.
  • Gateway to Opportunity: Inspiring Change through Youth Career Development and Training. Speakers: John Pady, CEDA Weatherization Training Center; Rufus Greer, YouthBuild; and Susan Stanley, California Indian Manpower Consortium, Inc.
  • Community by Design: Transformation through the Central Iowa Basic Income Pilot. Speakers: Ashley Ezzio, Uplift; Moline Mayor Sangeetha Rayaputi, Level Up; and Thurgood Brooks, West End Revitalization coordinator.
  • Additional presenters include: Stormy Udell, Iowa Association of Community Action Agencies; Sharon Varallo, Augustana Prison Education Program; and Anderson Sainci, Dubuque (Iowa) Office of Shared Prosperity & Neighborhood Support.
