Rock Island Assistant Fire Chief Terry Smith ending 28-year career

After 28 years of service with the Rock Island Fire Department, Assistant Fire Chief Terry Smith is retiring effective Wednesday, July 17, the city announced in a news release.

After 28 years of service with the Rock Island Fire Department, Assistant Fire Chief Terry Smith is retiring effective Wednesday, July 17, the city announced in a news release.

Mr. Smith has been a member of the Rock Island Fire Department since 1996. During his tenure, he has served as a lieutenant, captain and as battalion chief of the Third Battalion. He was promoted to assistant fire chief on Jan. 23, 2023.

In that role, Mr. Smith has served as the department’s training officer and ensured that all personnel are prepared to handle the evolving challenges facing the modern fire service. He also has supervised buildings and grounds and assisted with the development of a strategic plan to maintain the fleet and facilities.

“I am pleased to recognize Assistant Chief Terry Smith for his remarkable 28 years of

dedicated service to our community,” Rock Island Fire Chief Bob Graff said in the release. “Throughout his career, Assistant Chief Smith has exemplified the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and commitment. His leadership has been instrumental in ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens.”

While Mr. Smith’s retirement marks the end of an era for the department, Mr. Graff said “his impact will be felt for many years to come. His unwavering dedication to public safety has left an indelible mark on all who have had the privilege of working with him.”

He added that Mr. Smith’s “contributions have not only enhanced the capabilities of our department but have also strengthened the trust and confidence of the community we serve.”

“As we celebrate his retirement, we reflect on the countless lives he has touched and the numerous achievements he has accomplished,” Mr. Graff said, adding that Mr. Smith’s “legacy will continue to inspire future generations of officers.” 

A retirement party will be held Wednesday, July 17, at the Rock Island Central Fire Station.
