The Rock Island Arsenal will again host two events on Monday, Sept. 11, to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that took place on Sept. 11, 2001.
Both events are open to the public and include a:
- Flag walk, which will begin at 6:30 a.m. Monday. Marchers will assemble at 6 a.m. at Memorial Field on the RIA to carry American flags on a 2.5-mile course that will end at the 9/11 Memorial, across from Memorial Field, according to a news release. The flags will be placed in a field adjacent to the 9/11 Memorial to represent the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
- Remembrance ceremony, which begins at 10:30 a.m. Monday, will be held at the 9/11 Memorial to honor those who died in the terrorist attacks and those who have given their lives since in military service. It includes guest speaker Maj. Gen. David Wilson, commanding general, U.S. Army Sustainment Command, and senior mission commander, Rock Island Arsenal, as well as a wreath-laying ceremony, 21-gun salute, a moment of silence and the playing of taps.
Those who wish to participate in the flag walk or attend the ceremony should enter the Arsenal through the Moline Gate and be prepared to show valid identification.
