RI County hosts free household hazardous waste collection

From oil-based paint to household cleaners, Illinois residents can dispose of it all for free at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event on Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Rock Island County Fairgrounds, 4200 Archer Drive, East Moline.

Reserve your drop-off time by visiting: https://signup.com/go/MNgCgEU. Free, reusable tote bags will be given to the first 100 households at the event.

Waste materials accepted at the event are: aerosol paint, anti-freeze, cleaning products, fluorescent light bulbs, gasoline, herbicides, household non-alkaline batteries, insecticides, mercury, oil-based paints, paint thinners, pesticides and used motor oil.

Latex paint will not be accepted at the event. Latex paint is not hazardous. It can be safely discarded in a regular trash receptacle once it is dried out. Removing the lid of the paint can and leaving it open to the air will allow it to dry over a period of days.

Other materials that will not be accepted at the event include: agricultural chemicals, ammunition, controlled substances, explosives, farm oil, fireworks, fire extinguishers, lead and alkaline batteries, needles, prescription and over the counter medications, propane tanks and smoke detectors.

The event is a collaborative effort by the Rock Island County Waste Management Agency (RICWMA) and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

For more information, residents may visit the RICWMA website at www.ricwma.org or call at (309) 788-8925.
