Registered Apprenticeships boosting Iowa’s future workforce

Today’s ever-changing workforce can often create challenges for businesses, and require innovative solutions to meet them. One proven way that Iowa employers can prepare for the future, attract skilled employees, and grow their talent pool is through Registered Apprenticeship (RA) Programs.

RA Programs are a rewarding option for both a business and a future employee. The industry-driven and high-quality pathway combines on-the-job learning with related training instruction that results in an earned nationally recognized credential upon completion. RA programs reduce turnover costs and increase employee retention. About 93% of employees who complete an apprenticeship program remain employed after its completion.

The programs allow an apprentice to receive a paycheck from day one, and their wages increase as they continue learning the necessary skills through on-the-job learning by an experienced mentor. Related instruction can be delivered to apprentices through a traditional classroom, online, self-study, or in-house training options.

Thanks to the state leadership, the ability to create or expand an RA Program in Iowa is easier. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) recently recognized Iowa as a State Apprenticeship Agency (SAA), meaning that the Iowa Office of Apprenticeship (IOA) now oversees and administers RA programs throughout the state, helping employers build their skilled workforce. The IOA helps with program development, technical assistance, customer service support, compliance and monitoring.

There are hundreds of Registered Apprenticeship occupations already established and programs continue to grow in the areas of healthcare, education, transportation, technology, and more. You may be surprised to find an occupation already in your business may qualify as an RA Program.

Even better, your business may qualify for state grants to help offset costs associated with implementing a program. Contact the IOA to learn if you are eligible.

National Apprenticeship Week 2024 is Nov. 17-23. This year’s theme is “10 Years of Engagement, Expansion and Innovation.” Since the recognition began, thousands of events have educated both job seekers and employers on the benefits of RA Programs. To learn about events in your area, or how your business can benefit from an RA Program, visit apprenticeship.iowa.gov or call the IOA at (515) 725-3675.

The progress made in Iowa should make any business consider an RA Program to help fulfill their workforce needs. Not often will you find a better tool that can build your future pipeline.
