MUSCATINE, Iowa — This summer, the former McKee Button Co. building got new life with the completion of a $20 million renovation project. The building got a new name — McKee Plaza — and it became home to KENT Worldwide’s Consumer Brands Division headquarters.
Today, a 70-person workforce fills jobs there in finance, customer service, marketing and innovation.
In addition, the 41,000-square-foot renovated building is a source of pride in the KENT company and the Muscatine community.
“Since the grand opening of the building, the response from the community has been fantastic. It seems like anytime the building is brought up, whether by employees or anyone who lives or works in Muscatine, the comments are about how nice the building looks and how great it is that KENT invested into this historic building,” said Johnnie Arnett, director of corporate communications with KENT.
Ms. Arnett added that some work continues on the building. The company continues to put finishing touches on McKee Plaza, such as installing artwork in common spaces and offices. However, no additional major work is planned.
The Muscatine community also has enjoyed seeing new life put into the building.
Mayor Brad Bark, who also is president and CEO of the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry, called the project a remarkable example of how public-private investment and community vision can unite to breathe new life into our historic landmarks.
“I’ve been thrilled to see the enthusiasm this project has inspired — from local families enjoying walks along the Mississippi to a vibrant bookend to our historic downtown. The transformation not only preserves the legacy of the McKee Button Factory but also establishes a dynamic center for innovation at KENT Worldwide Consumer Brands Division,” Mr. Bark said.
He added: “Projects like this are what make Muscatine an even better place to live, work, play, and invest.”
