Paddling novices and pros alike are invited to a Safe Paddling Class being offered by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at the auxiliary’s Sunset Marina station, 10 31st Ave., Rock Island.

The session — which is $15 per person — will be especially helpful for those planning to take part in the upcoming Floatzilla, which is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 19, in the Quad Cities.

Class participants will learn about the Mississippi River and locking through Lock 15, plus a host of skills for paddling solo or with others, according to a news release. Attendees also will receive a free life jacket.

For more information about the session and to register, contact Charles Brennan with the Coast Guard Auxiliary at (630) 290-4773 or Charles.brennan@cgauxdiv9.org. For more information about Floatzilla, visit its website or email mcorsiglia@riveraction.org.
