UnityPoint Health – Trinity will offer a presentation on a ground-breaking combined procedure offering a new avenue for stroke risk reduction in individuals living with both atrial fibrillation (AFib) and dementia at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at its Jardine Auditorium on its Rock Island campus at 2701 17th St.

The innovative approach was first done in the Quad Cities by UnityPoint Health – Trinity in April at Trinity Heart Center in Rock Island. The procedure merges catheter ablation to correct heart rhythm with the implantation of the WATCHMAN device,. It’s designed to reduce the risk of stroke.

Dr. Mark Shen, of Cardiovascular Medicine, PLLC, will discuss the procedure Aug. 26 at the first free 2025 Heart to Heart community education event. It is hosted by UnityPoint Health.

“This one-time, minimally invasive procedure helps prevent blood clots without the need for long-term blood thinners, which can be challenging for those with memory concerns,” said Dr. Shen. “Together, ablation and the WATCHMAN offer a safer, more manageable way to reduce stroke risk and support longer, healthier lives.”

The event is free, but seats are limited and registration is encouraged. You can register through this link.

The Heart to Heart series is a free community educational initiative aimed at increasing understanding of heart disease and prevention. This event is made possible by the generosity of donors to the Trinity Health Foundation.
