National Recovery Month celebrates transformations, renewed relationships, and hope

In the world of drug and alcohol counseling, no two stories are alike. It’s a journey of both despair and hope, highlighting the devastating effects of substance use but also the unique path to recovery for each individual.

Substance use disorder is a complex condition that affects a person’s brain and behavior, leading to their inability to control the use of legal or illegal substances despite the harmful consequences. About half of the individuals who experience a substance use disorder during their lifetime will also experience a co-occurring disorder, such as anxiety disorder, depression, or bipolar disorder, according to the National Institute on Drug Use, highlighting the importance of adopting a complete behavioral health approach in treating substance use disorders.

The effects of substance use disorders are far-reaching and extend beyond the individual grappling with addiction, touching the lives of families right here in the Quad Cities and across every corner of the United States.

When someone struggles with substance or alcohol addiction, it causes them great distress and affects their friends and family. Loved ones often put their lives on hold, sacrificing personal priorities to provide care and support. Stress levels rise, and normalcy fades away.

While overcoming a substance use disorder may present challenges, it is a treatable, chronic medical condition that many individuals can find success with the proper evidence-based support. Finding recovery can be a transformative experience with the proper support. It provides individuals with the opportunity to lead a healthier, more fulfilling life, allowing them to heal themselves and repair the relationships that were damaged by substance use.

In honor of National Recovery Month, celebrated every September, I’d like to invite you to join us in cheering on and applauding those brave individuals who’ve triumphed over adversity and chosen a path of recovery. It’s the perfect time for all of us to extend our heartfelt appreciation to those in recovery, the committed professionals who’ve stood by them, and the loved ones who’ve continuously held on to hope.
