MUSCATINE, Iowa – NAMI Greater Mississippi Valley will offer two free, nationally developed mental health education programs in Muscatine to provide important information to family members and friends of people living with a mental health condition.
NAMI’s Family & Friends program is a 90-minute seminar that provides practical skills and information to address concerns such as understanding mental health diagnoses, treatment and recovery, effective communication strategies and crisis preparation strategies.
It will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Muscatine Community College, Strahan Building, Classroom 8, 152 Colorado St.
The intensive core program, Family-to-Family, will be held on eight consecutive Tuesdays from Sept. 30 to Nov. 18, from 6-8:30 p.m., also at the same Strahan Building classroom on the Muscatine campus.
This is an evidence-based program for families and caregivers of individuals dealing with such mental health conditions as major depression, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder. Many family members describe this program as “life changing.”
Both programs are delivered by trained volunteers with lived experience supporting a loved one with a mental health condition. More information and links to register for both programs are available at www.namigmv.org/events.
