Muscatine woman wins Erma Bombeck contest

A Muscatine, Iowa, woman has been named as one of the winners of the 2024 Erma Bombeck Writing Competition.

Charla Schafer won top honors in the Global Humor category with her essay ā€œFuneral Notes.ā€

She was one of four winning writers in the event.

The winners receive a free registration to the April 4-6 Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop, $1,000 and publication of their essays online and in the workshop’s program.Ā 

The other top contest winners were: Lindsey Roth of Dayton, Ohio, in the Local Human-Interest category with her essay ā€œA Good Day’s Work;ā€Ā  Marcy O’Brien of Warren, Pennsylvania, in the Global Human-Interest category with ā€œHeart and Sole;ā€ and in the Local Humor category, Aline Pusecker Taylor of Powell, Ohio, won with ā€œPride Goeth Before the Fall Parent-Teacher Conference.ā€

The winners will be honored during the Erma Bombeck Celebration Evening slated for Wednesday, April 3, at the Woodbourne Library in Centerville, Ohio. Betsy Bombeck, daughter of Bill and Erma Bombeck, will serve as the keynote speaker.
