Muscatine Community College to celebrate Legends on April 4

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Muscatine Community College will host its annual MCC Legends celebration at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4, at the Merrill Hotel, 119 W Mississippi Drive. 

A program will follow the dinner to honor this year’s MCC Legends. The are Paul Mayes, a former biology instructor, and Jan Phillips, music instructor. Tickets are $75 a person and available at eicc.edu/mcclegends

According to a release from MCC, both Mr. Mayes and Ms. Phillips exemplify dedication, passion, and a commitment to education that continues to inspire. Mr. Mayes, known for his expertise in biology, and Ms. Phillips, celebrated for her contributions to music education, have each touched the lives of countless individuals during their tenure, the college said. 

The release said students who had the privilege of learning from them recall the passion and joy they brought to their respective subjects, as well as their support and care for students.

Beyond the classroom, both remain actively engaged in the Muscatine community.

Legends active volunteers

Ms. Phillips directs the Muscatine Civic Chorale and the choir at Walnut Baptist Church. She also coordinates volunteers for the MCC Food Pantry. Meanwhile, Mr. Mayes contributes his time to various community initiatives, They include the Muscatine Pollinators’ group and educational workshops.

MCC Legends is supported by the MJC/MCC Alumni Association and Muscatine Communitty College Foundation. The MJC/MCC Alumni Association supports current students through a grant process. It granted over $14,000 in the past five years to assist student groups. They include Phi Theta Kappa, Business Professionals of America, LULAC, MCC Student Success Center and the publication of a student creative writing project.

The evening will feature samples of signature dishes from the city’s best area restaurants, and students and chefs from EICC’s culinary program. 

The Muscatine Community College Foundation will grant $450,000 in student scholarships next year to support the mission of access to education. Hundreds of students are helped every year. The Legends event will help raise funds for MCC students.

Previous Legends have been honored MCC include: They include: Max Allan Collins, Jeff Armstrong, Marv Krieger, Evelyn Schauland, Roy J. Sr. and Lucille Carver, and Stan and Helen Howe.
