The first prize winner of the 2026 welding competition, Jorge Rosales of Moline High School, was awarded a $5,000 scholarship to attend MTI. Additionally, he earned Moline High School a $1,000 donation from MTI to support the welding department.

Second prize winner, Lyrik Sterling of Moline High School, received a $2,500 scholarship. The third prize winner, Giovani Hernandez of Moline High School, received a $1,000 scholarship to MTI. All participants received a $500 MTI scholarship.

Each competitor completed a timed welding project that was judged by a panel of welding professionals, including MTI faculty. Participants, family and friends were invited to take campus tours and had opportunities to meet with MTI’s Admissions Team and the Welding Department.

“We encourage high schoolers who are interested in learning to weld to come compete, all skill levels are welcome,” said Ms. Colvin. “It’s a fun day full of friends, family and exciting competition. We’re proud to be a part of helping more high schoolers see the value of the skilled trades. We know these students can change their lives by learning a trade, and we hope these scholarships serve as a stepping stone toward a successful future.”

Midwest Technical Institute (MTI) offers hands-on training in several skilled trades career fields, including welding, HVAC/R, electrical, healthcare, truck driving and cosmetology. MTI’s goal is to provide students with the skills necessary to begin careers in the skilled trades industry.
