
The City of Moline and Metronet announced the completion of the main construction of a 100% fiber optic network, making Moline a ‘Gigabit City’ in a press release Tuesday.
“This achievement brings the fastest internet service provider in the country to the city’s homes and businesses, empowering residents and driving economic growth,” the release stated.
The partnership began in December 2022, with construction starting in February 2023. Over the past year and a half, Metronet has invested more than $19 million in the project. it buried 125 miles of fiber and added 60 more miles to the city’s telephone poles.
The completion of the fiber optic network means that Moline residents can now access high-speed internet with speeds up to 5 Gbps.
“Today marks a significant milestone for Moline,” said Mayor Sangeetha Rayapati. “Our partnership with Metronet has not only enhanced the quality of life for our residents but has also positioned Moline as a leader in technological innovation. Access to high-speed internet is essential for both families and businesses, and we’re thrilled to see this project come to fruition.”
