Deere & Co. announced the death on Monday, July 7, of longtime and distinguished John Deere board member Sherry M. Smith.

Ms. Smith joined the Deere board in 2011 and brought with her a wealth of experience, insight, and dedication, a news release from the Moline-based global equipmaker said.

She was the board’s lead director and also served on the Corporate Governance and Compensation committees. In light of her death, the board voted to reduce its size to 10 members and R. Preston Feight as Lead Director, according to a Security and Exchange Commission filing. 

In the Deere & Co. news release Deere Chairman and CEO John C. May lauded the former executive vice president and chief financial officer at Supervalu Inc. for her 14 years of service to the Fortune 100 company.

“Sherry’s leadership, wisdom, and kindness have significantly impacted our organization. Her strategic vision and unwavering commitment to our company and stakeholders have helped steer Deere through numerous milestones and achievements,” Mr. May said.

“Sherry’s absence will be profoundly felt, and we extend our sincere condolences to her family,” he added.
