Iowa American Water residential customers will see about an $8 increase, on average, on their monthly bill after the Iowa Utilities Commission (IUC) approved the company’s rate request earlier this month.

In an order issued Tuesday, July 15, the IUC approved the company’s compliance filing which set the new water and sewer rates that go into effect Friday, Aug. 1. The IUC issued its Final Decision and Order after first approving the rate increase in May. The effective date and the increased amount was set after another review by IUC.

The order stems from the Iowa American Water rate review case filed on May 1, 2024. The increase marks the first time the company’s rates have increased in about four years, Iowa American said in a Wednesday, July 30, news release.

The increased rates reflect approximately $157 million in infrastructure investments by the Iowa utility since its last rate filing. The investments, made across the Iowa Quad Cities region, included replacement of aging water pipelines and upgrading of treatment plants, storage tanks, wells and pumping stations. In 2024, it reported $40 million in infrastructure investments.

“We are committed to making appropriate investments to continue to provide high-quality water

and wastewater services,” Brad Nielsen, the company’s president, said in the release. “Our effective capital planning and consistent focus on efficiently operating our systems keep our services compliant with state and federal regulations for the benefit of the customers and communities we serve in Iowa.”

Under the IUC’s order, the approved rates represented a total annualized revenue increase of about $13.6 million. The average residential customer using 4,000 gallons of water per

month will see a monthly increase of about $8.
