Iowa law firms of Dickinson and Bradshaw announce merger

The Des Moines-based law firms of Dickinson, Mackaman, Tyler & Hagen, P.C. and Bradshaw, Fowler, Proctor & Fairgrave, P.C. have announced plans to merge, effective Jan. 1, 2024.

In a news release issued Thursday, Dec. 7, the firms said the combined entity will operate under the name Dickinson, Bradshaw, Fowler & Hagen, P.C.

Financial details of the merger were not disclosed. But the firms believe this is the largest merger of equal-sized, Iowa-based and Iowa-led law firms.

According to the release, this marks both the first merger for 86-year-old Dickinson and the 106-year-old Bradshaw. Its combined roster will include almost 60 lawyers.

“Both Bradshaw and Dickinson bring to this merger strong values, strong cultures, and an equally strong commitment to serving clients and the greater Iowa community,” Ron Mountsier, president of Dickinson Law, said in the release. “We’re strategically bringing together two of the strongest litigation practices in Iowa, as well as several complementary areas of law to provide clients with an expanded range of legal services. Our shared values will strengthen our practices and increase the breadth and depth of skills of our professionals.”

Jason Madden, a member of the Bradshaw Executive Committee, indicated that Dickinson has long had “complementary practice areas to our own.”

He added, “Merging the two firms together will allow us to provide expanded services to our clients in several additional areas of law. In this coming together of equals, it is a natural fit given our shared history of serving clients throughout Iowa and our commitment to community and public service.”

Mr. Madden said: “Together we will become stronger, while keeping our clients at the center of everything we do.”

Once combined, Dickinson Bradshaw will boast one of the largest teams of attorneys in Iowa. The combined firm will boast more than 90 practice areas including: Litigation; Insurance and Insurance Defense; Banking & Financial Services; Business & Corporate Law; Employment & Labor; Workers’ Compensation; Real Estate and Land Use; Municipal Law; Personal Injury; Lending, Collections & Bankruptcy; Divorce & Family Law; Elder Law, Wills, Trusts & Estate Planning; Tax Law and Tax Planning; Cybersecurity, Data Breach, & Privacy; Education Law; Intellectual Property Law, and many more.

As of Jan. 1, the merged firm will be located on the 36th and 37th floors (suite 3700) at 801 Grand Avenue in downtown Des Moines.
