DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird is urging Iowans to be vigilant against scams as the holiday shopping and giving season gets underway.
“It’s important to watch out for deals that seem too good to be true and know who you are giving to,” Ms. Bird said in a recent news release. “Scammers are looking to prey on Iowans’ generosity and those looking for good deals.”

With sales running throughout November for events such as Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday, scammers are actively trying to take advantage of shoppers and donors.
She offers these tips to help Iowans avoid scams:
- Double-check websites: Scammers create sites identical to well-known retailers. Look for spelling errors in the web address, check reviews, and verify a company’s contact information.
- Be wary of “exclusive deal” emails or texts: Do not click on suspicious links from unknown senders as scammers may be looking to gather private information.
- Beware of gift card scams: Only purchase gift cards from trusted retailers and ensure security codes are intact.
- Look out for “order confirmation” or “failed delivery” scams: Never send private information in response to phishing texts or emails alerting you to a supposed problem with an order.
- Research causes and organizations: Search the organization’s name online with terms like “review,” “scam,” or “complaint.” Double-check the exact name, as scammers often use names similar to legitimate charities.
- Ask questions and don’t give into pressure to give quickly: If solicited by phone, ask critical questions, such as how much of your donation goes to the program. Hang up on anyone who pressures you to donate immediately.
- Use a credit card: Credit cards often offer stronger scam protection than debit cards.
