Iowa American Water urges conservation as summer heats up

As summer temperatures climb and the demand for water increases, Iowa American Water is encouraging customers to embrace water conservation.

Stressing the importance of mindful water use, Brad Nielsen, president of Iowa American Water, said “With summer upon us, it’s more important than ever to use water wisely.”

“We encourage our customers and the public to reduce outdoor watering, especially after it rains, and to adopt smart irrigation practices. It’s our collective responsibility to reduce water consumption and take proactive steps to protect our water supply,” Mr. Nielsen said in a news release.

According to Iowa American Water, many homeowners unknowingly waste water by irrigating during peak evaporation times or using more water than necessary for a healthy lawn. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that half of all outdoor water usage is wasted. Wise water usage, both indoors and outdoors, is crucial for conservation and ensures a safe, clean, and reliable water supply for current and future generations. Every drop counts, from adjusting watering schedules to repairing household leaks.

The utility, based in Davenport, offers these helpful tips for wise water use:

  • Water smart: Water early in the morning, later in the day, or at night to minimize evaporation. Up to 30% of water can be lost by watering midday.
  • Harvest rain: Collect rainwater in rain barrels for use on outdoor plants and gardens.
  • Check sprinklers: Ensure sprinkler heads are not wasting water on pavement or unwanted areas.
  • Sweep, don’t spray: Use a broom instead of a hose to clean patios, driveways, and sidewalks.
  • Mulch beds: Apply a two- to three-inch layer of mulch to garden beds to retain moisture and prevent weeds.
  • Raise your mower: Set your mower higher. Grass cut to 2.5 to 3.5 inches is more drought-resistant and healthier.
  • Detect leaks: Even small leaks can waste thousands of gallons of water annually. As many as 10% of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day.

Mr. Nielsen also noted that efficient water use can help reduce water bills. “Actively monitoring and making an effort to use less water in the warm weather months can help keep the usage portion of customer water bills in check, helping them to save money.”
