Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities will host two ground-breaking ceremonies for new homes on Saturday, April 5. These events will be held on the empty lots that will become Habitat homes No. 143 and 144.

This first ground-breaking ceremony will be at 10 a.m. at 2510 5th Ave., Moline. It will be the future home of Koko and family. (Habitat does not identify its partner families by full name.) The home is being sponsored by the John Deere Foundation, and Mel and Judy Rullman.

The second launch will be at 11 a.m. at 1402 18th St., East Moline. This empty lot will become the future home of Akouyo and Kokouvi and family. The build is being sponsored by Russell, CNH, Arconic, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Quad Cities Community Foundation and the QC Housing Council.

Habitat Quad Cities also has two home builds underway in Davenport and hopes to break ground on another three home builds later this year.

Members of the community, who are welcome to Saturday’s events, also helped Habitat dedicate its 140th home at 408 E. Eighth St., Davenport, back in December.

Habitat’s affordable homeownership program is a long-term solution to the current affordable housing crisis. Habitat partner families must complete a minimum of 250 volunteer hours of sweat equity and attend mandatory homeownership preparation classes with the support of a volunteer mentor.

When their home build is finished, partner families purchase the home from Habitat with affordable monthly payments on a zero-interest mortgage.
