Gilda’s Club Quad Cities is joining its fellow Cancer Support Community’s network partners today, June 28, to celebrate the second annual Community Is Stronger Than Cancer Day.

The event takes place each year on Gilda Radner’s birthday, June 28, to raise awareness and promote the support, resources and services provided to cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and loved ones. Ms. Radner, the “Saturday Night Live” star who died of ovarian cancer, spent time at The Wellness Community in Santa Monica, California, which inspired the creation of Gilda’s Club, according to a news release.

The Cancer Support Community was then formed in 2009 when Gilda’s Club and The Wellness Community merged.

Gilda’s Club Quad Cities has two locations on both sides of the river. They are part of 190 locations around the world that make up a network where cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and loved ones can access free emotional support, healthy lifestyle activities, social connection, education and referral services, all provided with compassion and expertise, in person or online, the release states.

Across all locations, the network saw nearly 300,000 visits in 2022. Last year, Gilda’s Club Quad Cities alone saw 2,300 visits.

For Community Is Stronger Than Cancer Day, Gilda’s Club Quad Cities is asking supporters to help the network raise awareness of its services by sharing its social media posts and using the hashtags #CelebrateCSCGC and  #CommunityisStrongerThanCancer and by donating to the organization. All money raised will stay in the community to help local families and individuals who are living with cancer access services for free, the release states.

To make an impact in a member’s life, $25 supports one family for one week, $40 supports one member for one month, $100 supports one family for one month, $250 supports one support group session, $500 supports one member for one year and $1,000 supports Noogieland kids programming for one month according to the release.
