A Genesis program that provides diabetic, food-insecure individuals and their families with access to healthy foods has received a financial boost from the Quad-City Times Bix 7 race.
Bix 7 Race Director Michelle Juehring recently presented a $10,000 check to the Genesis Health Services Foundation, which was this year’s Bix 7 charity. The money will help fund Genesis FoodPlex.
Food is medicine, and the Genesis FoodPlex helps support food-insecure individuals and their families with access to healthy foods via a food prescription.
According to information from Genesis FoodPlex, Type 2 diabetics on limited budgets routinely make hard choices between buying health groceries or paying for medication. Through the program, patients receive a FoodPlex prescription from their doctor. They also meet with a dietician and select groceries to meet their nutritional needs. The dietician provides information about how to prepare meals and manage the disease process.
The public also is invited to make a gift to Genesis Foundation or volunteer your time. Contact the Genesis FoodPlex by texting FoodPlext to 41444, mailing gifts to Genesis Foundation (Memo: FoodPlex), 1227 E. Rusholme St., Davenport, IA 52803, or by calling (563) 421-6865.
