Genesis Center for Weight Management earns accreditation

Patients seeking surgical treatment for obesity and its related conditions can receive high quality, nationally recognized care close to home.

The Genesis Center for Weight Management program has again earned accreditation as a Comprehensive Center by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program, a joint program of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

The accreditation signifies patients in the Genesis program receive multidisciplinary care, not just a surgical procedure. Comprehensive programs improve patient outcomes and lead to long-term success.

Since 2003, the Genesis center has performed nearly 3,000 weight-loss procedures and offers two surgical weight-loss options: gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) and sleeve gastrectomy.

“We believe our patients are our patients for life, and we take pride not only in our quality of care, surgical success and patient outcomes but the continuing comprehensive care our patients receive after surgery,” said Dr. Matthew Christophersen, medical director for the Genesis Center for Weight Management. “Our team is dedicated to quality improvement, safety and patient-centered care.”

To earn accreditation, the Center for Weight Management underwent an extensive site visit and met criteria for staffing, training, facility infrastructure and protocols for care, ensuring its ability to support patients with obesity. The center also participates in a national data registry that yields reports on the quality of its surgical outcomes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates about 93 million adults in the U.S. are affected by obesity, and that number continues to increase. Obesity increases the risks of morbidity and mortality because of its commonly associated diseases and conditions, including Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Metabolic and bariatric surgery has proven to be effective in reducing these conditions.

The Center for Weight Management, located on Genesis Medical Center, Davenport’s East Rusholme Street campus, also offers non-surgical weight-loss options.
