The remarkable thing about the QCBJ’s inaugural Fastest Growing Quad Cities Company isn’t just the eye-popping 211% increase in revenues that Revive at The Group Med Spa posted from 2019 to 2021. The five-year-old, Davenport-based business did it during a period of major expansion and investment, and at the height of one of the most challenging times in history for business of its type: the COVID-19 pandemic. “We can’t be more thrilled with the success it’s been having and the way the Quad Cities embraced it,” Dave Larson, business administrator for The Group Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialists, P.C, said of The Group’s Revive offshoot. “We are honored to be nominated alongside many QC area companies and leaders,” he told fellow honorees at a well-attended reception Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Bally’s Quad Cities, Rock Island. “Our growth is a direct result of the community and small business support we have received during some pretty challenging years.”

During an interview with the QCBJ, Mr. Larson also repeatedly credited the professionals at Revive and The Group for the spa’s rapid rise and for the additional growth it is already planning in 2023 at the free-standing medical spa next door to The Group. For Mr. Larson, the secret to the success of growing the Revive operation so far has been employing quality people who have the passion and desire to not only succeed but exceed expectations.  The idea for Revive grew out of the need to increase revenues at The Group medical practice. That’s a frequent challenge in health care, Mr. Larson said, because the rates and fees providers charge often are dependent on what insurance will agree to pay. The goal was to take advantage of the goodwill that had been built up with the women who have been served the past 44 years by The Group’s health care professionals and tempt that loyal customer base with attractive new services. To get the ball rolling, Mr. Larson turned to the experts. They included Karla Carpenter, a certified laser treatment technician and aesthetician, with experience in providing skin treatments such as facials, makeup application and hair removal.  After picking her brain, Mr. Larson said he quickly hired her and as many of her associates as he could. That decision paid dividends for Revive, where Ms. Carpenter remains on a spa staff of professionals who boast 80 years of experience and provide a large menu of spa services to an ever-growing client base. In the beginning, Revive was expected to focus on day spa services. But under the leadership of the late Dr. Anita Pinc, Revive evolved into a medical spa and its menu of services and client base increased exponentially. After Dr. Pinc’s tragic death in 2020 in a boating accident, Dr. Jana VanRybroek took over as Revive’s medical director. “The conception and success of Revive is thanks to many, including the late Dr. Anita Pinc who nurtured the spa from infancy and served as medical director,” Dr. Van Rybroek said. “Her focus on preventative medicine, lifelong wellness, and caring for others, naturally led to the creation of Revive at The Group Med Spa.” Revive was launched in 2017 inside The Group’s large building at 5350 Eastern Ave, Davenport. “It was nice to walk before we could run,” Mr. Larson said of Revive’s early digs within the walls of the thriving medical practice. But it quickly experienced growing pains and needed its own space. The expansion into Suite 100 in the next-door building at 5374 Eastern Ave., was not without its challenges. The biggest for the new free-standing spa was COVID-19. It was “a nerve wracking time,” Mr. Larson told the QCBJ. He credited staff for successfully managing the COVID safety and patient protocols to serve Revive’s clients. “Though we opened our doors in 2017, our January 2020 expansion happened only two months prior to COVID,” Mr. Larson said. “We moved into our new space, opened our doors and immediately closed them. However, with our team’s effort and initiative we were able to remain active through our online sales store. The community and our clients showed up for us in a big way and we will forever appreciate their support. Without that support and our amazing team, we would not be where we are today.”  In the end, the global pandemic was not without its benefits. Revive, and many other businesses like it, were the beneficiaries of a pent up demand for services created during the isolation of the pandemic, Mr. Larson said. That fed some of the company’s triple-digit growth. These days Revive is betting on that growth continuing. The client base clearly is there.  Mr. Larson said The Group serves between 15,000-16,000 patients a year, and the still relatively new Revive serves 4,500-5,000 clients a year. To accommodate its anticipated growth, Revive has purchased a large suite in an office building next door to its free-standing clinic where it created the high-end medical spa environment that has attracted a growing number of clients. The latest expansion is planned for 2023, when Revive is expected to grow into an existing tenant space it acquired in 2022 adjacent to Revive’s current location. Eventually, it will occupy both Suite 100 and Suite 200 on the corner of Davenport’s Eastern Avenue and 53rd Street. The added square footage will allow for more immediate scheduling opportunities due to the increased number of injectable, massage, laser and aesthetic treatment rooms, the company said. It also will feature a larger front desk check-in area, along with a dedicated team training room. The expansion also shows Revive at The Group Med Spa’s “dedication to this community, and commitment to our patients,” it said in a news release about the expansion.
