The Estes Team of Companies has announced that it is consolidating Point Builders into City Construction. Both companies, which are part of the Estes Team of Companies, serve the Iowa City-Cedar Rapids Corridor. Point Builders also serves the Quad Cities. In a Thursday, July 3 news release, Estes described the move as a strategic decision, saying that both City Construction and Estes Construction “have had demonstrable growth across the Corridor market and the Quad Cities.” The company announced the decision to its 300-person workforce about a week before the release. The transition will be fully implemented by Friday, Aug. 1, according to Estes. “As our companies have grown, this consolidation brings new energy, restructures narrowed market and geographic overlap, and reduces administration redundancies,” Estes owner and President Kent Pilcher said in the release. “It reflects our ongoing commitment to strengthening our operations through resource alignment and sharpened focus.”In addition to Point Builders and City Construction, the Estes Team of Companies consists of Estes Construction, based in Davenport, with offices in Des Moines and Galesburg, Illinois; Murray Company, with offices in Kansas City, St. Louis and Des Moines; and Vantage Architects, with locations in Cedar Rapids and Davenport. Murray Company specializes in rural and community hospital projects across a five-state region. Point Builders has offices in Davenport and Cedar Rapids. City Construction, based in Iowa City, has historically employed about 40 people.“City Construction’s reach is expanding, and the company has a solid foundation of financial stability, long-term clients, and an experienced leadership team,” Mr. Pilcher said.
‘Rooted in optimism’
Estes described the consolidation as a proactive step, and said it is “rooted in optimism around City Construction’s team of talent, business model, and growth patterns.” Kent PilcherCity’s Vice President Dustin Nordell will now be responsible for operations in the entire Iowa City-Cedar Rapids corridor. “Dustin has successfully led City’s growth since joining the Team of Companies 11 years ago, and City is well positioned and equipped to provide a high level of service to the entire corridor area,” Mr. Pilcher said in an email to the QCBJ. He added “City has earned a great deal of respect from clients such as the University of Iowa Hospital System, and we’re confident Dustin (Nordell) can continue to support the corridor.” In addition to the health care system, City has worked extensively with the Iowa City Community School District and other public clients. It is currently building a new city park pool for Iowa City and has constructed a number of K-12 projects there. Some include: West High School renovation ($22 million); City High School remodel ($10 million), North Central Middle School addition ($19 million) and more. Under the new structure, Dan Kuenzi, who now leads Point Builders’ business development, will transition to City and coordinate all business development in the corridor market.
