Dawn Wilcox, a longtime Empowering Abilities team member, is the first recipient of the newly established Debra Lindbom Memorial Scholarship, the Davenport organization said.

Created in memory of long-time participant Debra “Deb” Lindbom, the scholarship honors her legacy by supporting Empowering Abilities staff in their professional development, a news release Thursday, Oct. 16, from the nonprofit said.
The scholarship provides financial assistance and includes a service commitment to ensure that the investment directly benefits the individuals and families served by the organization.
Ms. Wilcox joined Empowering Abilities in September 2001. She initially took a short-term aide position while adjusting to life as a single parent. That temporary role quickly evolved into a lifelong vocation, Empowering Abilities said.
“The participants became my second family,” Ms. Wilcox said in the release. “Even on the hardest days, just five minutes here could lift your spirits with laughter and joy.”
Over the years, she has built lasting relationships with participants, celebrated milestones and offered unwavering support through both joyful and challenging times. Her dedication has helped shape a culture of compassion and connection at Empowering Abilities, the organization said. The Debra Lindbom Memorial Scholarship can help further enhance her skills to continue delivering exceptional, person-centered care.
“I’ll be here until I retire,” Ms. Wilcox added. “And retirement doesn’t mean stepping away – I’ll still be donating, volunteering, and staying connected. Empowering Abilities is family, and I’m grateful to be part of it.”
