EICC offers fast-track course for substitute teachers

As schools across the Quad Cities region face a critical shortage of substitute teachers, Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC) is stepping up to help. 

EICC is offering a substitute teacher authorization course beginning March 1, at the Scott Community College Urban Campus in downtown Davenport. The course will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, March 1 and 8, on the SCC Urban Campus at 101 W. Third St.

This program provides the essential training to become an authorized substitute teacher, covering key topics such as ethics, classroom management, diversity, and instructional strategies. Upon successful completion of the course and submission of state requirements, participants will be eligible to substitute in K-12 classrooms.

Who qualifies for the course?

  • Individuals with at least 60 college credit hours from an accredited institution.
  • Certified paraprofessionals with a valid Paraeducator Certificate.

Certified paraeducators who complete this course may also substitute in their assigned special education classroom and, in some cases, serve in additional settings with district approval.
