Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC) is offering courses to help participants become authorized substitute teachers or coaches in the State of Iowa.

The Iowa Coaching Authorization course will be held in May and the Iowa Substitute Teacher Authorization course is scheduled for July and August.

EICC said the courses are ideal for parents, retirees, and others interested in part-time work and making a difference in students’ lives. Through the courses, participants could be working in schools or on the field this fall.

The $490 Coaching Authorization course covers topics such as human growth and development, coaching theory and ethics, anatomy and physiology, injury prevention and care, and communication. The course combines online and in-person learning and meets the state’s 55-hour workshop requirement. The course begins Tuesday, May 20, and successful completion allows individuals to apply for Coaching Authorization through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners.

The $100 Substitute Teacher Authorization course covers ethics, classroom management, diversity, and instructional strategies. It is offered in two Saturday sessions: July 12 and 19, or Aug. 2 and 9.

To qualify for the substitute teaching course, individuals must be at least 20 years old and have an associate’s degree, a paraeducator certificate, or have earned 60 credit hours from an accredited institution. Completing the course allows application to the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners for authorization to substitute in K-12 classrooms.
