The Double D Diner on the west side of Davenport is a “shining star” that is gaining a customer base and serving great meals.
That’s the view of Davenport Mayor Mike Matson who helped welcome the small restaurant and its new owner to the community during a brief ceremony Thursday morning, Oct. 17.
Mr. Matson was one of about 25 people – most from the business community – at a Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting for the Double D Diner at 2225 W. 53rd St. (It is located at the corner of North Pine and 53rd streets in a retail business building that also houses The Coffee Revolution, Salons & Studios, and Essentials.)
Double D actually opened for business almost two years ago, but had an ownership change early this year. Rachel Stevens is the new owner of the restaurant that has about seven employees.
“You really have to have a lot of dedicated people to make this work. The two people behind me are ones I can count on,” said Ms. Stevens, pointing out the employees working the kitchen area Tuesday morning.
She added that business has been good at the Double D with the restaurant making some changes to attract new customers. Some of those changes include acquiring a liquor license, doing catering and increasing social media presence by getting on Facebook. (The diner’s Facebook page can be found here.)
“We try to keep up with good customer service and good food,” she added.
The new owner added that the diner’s peak business times seem to be breakfast and lunch on the weekends.
The Double D menu includes a “fusion of classic comfort and modern culinary flair,” according to its website. A few of the menu items include:
- Meat “Sweats” burrito: Ham, sausage, bacon, egg, colby jack shredded cheese and potatoes rolled into a burrito with a flour tortilla.
- Huevos con chorizo: Two eggs, chorizo, hashbrowns, pinto beans served with a flour tortilla.
- Don’t Be a Turkey sandwich: Fresh ground turkey burger, topped with Swiss cheese, bacon and garlic aioli.
- Philly cheesesteak: Tender steak with grilled onions, peppers and melted pepper jack cheese andSwiss cheese.
- Other sandwiches include the giant tenderloin, buffalo chicken, reuben and a club sandwich.
