The Downtown Bettendorf Business Women (DBBW) organization recently awarded its 2023 Debe Lamar scholarships to Class of 2023 graduates Prashna Dahal of Pleasant Valley High School, and Kaia Young of Bettendorf High School.
The $500 awards honor the late Bettendorf Alderman Debe LaMar, who died in 2018. Ms. LaMar served five terms on the city council under three mayors. She exemplified the highest ideals of public service, loved all things art and encouraged women everywhere to dream big. There is a memorial to her at Bettendorf’s Lincoln Park.
Ms. Dahal plans to continue her education at the University of Iowa, and Ms. Young will attend Scott Community College with plans to transfer to the University of Iowa, according to a news release from the Bettendorf Business Network.
The DBBW was founded in 2018 to promote downtown businesses with women in leadership roles, the release states. Scholarship funds are raised through an annual sale of Christmas ornaments featuring a scene from downtown Bettendorf.
