The City of Davenport is offering an initiative to honor the men and women who serve in the United States Armed Forces, both past and present, with a new Veterans Tribute Banner Program.
Sponsorship of each 18″x 36″ banner costs $200 and includes the design, printing and installation. A portion of the costs will be donated to the Friends of Veterans Memorial Park.
Each banner will feature a veteran or active-duty service member, including their name, photo, and branch of service. The banners will be displayed on light posts on the path along the Davenport riverfront stretching from near Veterans Memorial Park to the Centennial Bridge. For the first year, the program is limited to 50 banners. The banners will be displayed next year from Memorial Day through Veterans Day.
“The City of Davenport wants to show its appreciation to both service members and their families,” said Davenport Mayor Mike Matson, who is a veteran. “These banners are a tribute to their service and sacrifice.”
“As a Vietnam veteran myself, I’m all for every opportunity that recognizes and honors veterans in a personalized way,” said Bill Churchill, president of the Friends of Veterans Memorial Park Committee. “These banners will enhance and expand the overall experience of those visiting the park.”
Similarly, other Iowa cities have been implementing banner programs to honor their veterans.
Davenport will begin accepting applications for banner sponsorships on Monday, Nov. 18. The applications will be reviewed on a first come, first served basis. Additional eligibility information and the application link are posted on the Veterans Tribute Banner page of the City of Davenport’s website.
