Rock Island has begun a city-wide, mandatory water meter replacement project that is expected to be completed over a five-year span.
According to the city, notices are being mailed to residents, asking for their cooperation. There is no cost for the replacement, but property owners are required to have their water meter replaced.
The work is being done in partnership with Ferguson Waterworks and McClintock Plumbing and the City of Rock Island.
To install the new water meter:
- McClintock Plumbing will need access to the meter inside the home or business.
- The water meter should be clear and accessible with four feet of clearance around it.
- An adult, age 18 or older, must be present at the time of installation.
A four-hour block of time will be scheduled and completed within that time frame. Installation should take about one hour, the city said.
Water meter replacement has begun in the city’s northwest section and will move east to the border of Moline, north of 18th Avenue. The project will ultimately finish in southwest Rock Island.
Funding for the estimated $1.5 million project has been allocated through AmericanRescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, with future years to be funded by user fees within the water fund.
All installers with McClintock Plumbing will have identification, wear uniforms, travel in marked vehicles and have completed background checks.
