River Action will turn out the Centennial Bridge lights at 11 p.m. on Monday through Wednesday nights, May 6-8, in order to protect birds migrating nocturnally as they pass through the Quad City region.

This operation will be conducted by Art-O-Lite/Crawford Company.

Also, River Action suggests that residents in the flyway turn off all nonessential lighting from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m. on those dates. Bright lights attract and disorient nocturnally migrating birds, potentially causing fatal collisions with buildings or exposure to additional day time hazards.

It is estimated that as many as 28,000 birds will migrate today, May 6, and Tuesday, May 7.  The estimate is 16,000 to 28,000 birds on Wednesday, May 8.
