The Grant W. Brissman and Virginia M. Brissman Foundation, which awards grants to support projects and organizations improving the quality of life in Milan, has announced the 2025 applications are now open.

Interested organizations are encouraged to learn more and apply by Sunday, Oct. 5, at www.qccommunityfoundation.org/brissmangrants.

The Brissman Foundation is a private foundation administered by the Quad Cities Community Foundation.

Organizations can apply for up to $10,000 to support their work in areas such as youth development, community development, cultural activities, and the relief of suffering for underprivileged people. Nonprofits located outside of Milan may apply if their applications demonstrate specific benefits to the village and its residents.

In 2024, Brissman Foundation trustees awarded more than $159,000 to local organizations — the largest amount the foundation has ever awarded through its competitive grant cycle.

“Brissman Foundation grants honor the legacy of Grant and Virginia Brissman by investing directly in the Milan area,” said Steve Gottcent, grantmaking specialist at the QC Community Foundation. “These projects strengthen our community and ensure that it continues to thrive for generations to come.”

Grant Brissman, a graduate of Rock Island High School and Brown’s Business College, was a pioneer Milan business owner who founded Brissman’s Auto Supply in 1948 and operated it for nearly 30 years before retiring in 1978. He also served as a founding director and shareholder of Blackhawk State Bank in Milan. His wife, Virginia, worked for Illinois Bell Telephone Co. for 40 years before retiring in 1977. Married for 60 years, the couple left a legacy of generosity that continues through the Brissman Foundation, established through their estates and administered by the Community Foundation.
