Black Hawk College is ready to begin a $40.8 million renovation project at its Quad-Cities Campus in Moline, college officials announced today, Dec. 21.As part of the college’s Facilities Master Plan, Building 3 will undergo a major renovation that will include science and health career labs, athletics and fitness spaces, classrooms, faculty offices and the BHC Police Department.BHC’s Board of Trustees approved the master plan over several years to ensure its facilities can meet the needs of its students and the communities it serves. It includes upgrades to facilities across its campuses as well as the construction of new facilities. Renovation is expected to be completed by mid-2024.According to an email on Friday, Dec. 9, to faculty and staff from Steve Frommelt, BHC vice president for finance and administration, the Building 3 renovation will include creation of a softball/baseball complex at the southwest corner of campus. Plans also include construction of a facilities and storage building north of 34th Avenue just west of The Villas, BHC’s only student housing community. Built in 1971, the renovated Building 3 will include:
Athletics/fitness facilities.
A new campus police office.
Food pantry.
Training room.
Eight natural science labs.
Four health science labs.
Seven science prep and storage rooms.
Five classrooms.
One computer lab.
Faculty offices.
New entry.
“While it is very exciting that we continue to make significant investments in our facilities, they do come with some disruption,” Mr. Frommelt warned in the staff email. “We ask for your patience during this time but we remain confident these projects will enhance the student experience and be something we can all be proud of.”BHC also shared an overview of the project entitled, “Key moves and relocations to know.” It included:
On Thursday, Dec. 8, the Campus Police Department was relocated to the Sustainable Technologies Building on the east side of campus (accessible from Lot 1 off 70th Street).
The Athletic Department moved Dec. 15-16 to Building 1 to the TLC’s computer lab.
The Hawk’s Cupboard food pantry has moved to the second floor of Building 4.
Lot 3 (the parking lot west of Building 3) will be closed and used by construction.
Depending on the weather, baseball is scheduled to be played on the new field by the end of March 2023.
Softball construction should occur March 1 through July 31 with games played on the new field by the beginning of August 2023.
Toilet facilities and press boxes should be available for use by August 2023.
The QC facilities and storage building should be completed in the spring 2023. It will house facilities’ equipment and excess furniture and equipment.
Building 3 preparations began Tuesday, Dec. 20. Foundation work was set to begin Jan. 3.
Gym access for athletics will be maintained for the entire construction project except May 15-Aug. 1, 2023, with “tunnel” access.
Building 3 access points will move around as necessary.
The Health Sciences Center will remain open but Building 3 will be out of commission for College for Kids the summers of 2023 and 2024.
