Have you ever wondered how a development goes from an idea to reality? Or who’s in charge of your taxes? The City of Bettendorf is offering residents a chance to learn the answers to these questions and more at its 2025 Citizen Academy.
This annual eight-week course provides an in-depth look at how the city operates, exploring all 12 city departments: Administration, Community Development, Economic Development, Family Museum, Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Legal, Library, Parks & Recreation, Police, and Public Works.
The citizen’s academy is open to Bettendorf residents 18 years and older. Classes begin Thursday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. and will meet every Thursday evening. A full-day bus tour on Friday, Oct. 17, will visit the community’s Compost Facility, Wastewater Treatment Plant, Scott Area Landfill, Waste Commission of Scott County, Scott Emergency Communications Center, and Iowa American Water Plant.
The citizen’s academy course concludes Thursday, Oct. 30, with an afternoon bus tour of the city’s parks, showcasing their fall foliage, followed by a graduation ceremony and party at Palmer Grill, located at the Palmer Hills Golf Complex.
Space is limited. To enroll, email Angie Sharp at [email protected]. The deadline to enroll is Sept. 1, 2025, or until the academy is full.
