Captain Greg Behning, a 30-year veteran of the Davenport Police Department, has been promoted to the rank of major and is serving as Davenport’s assistant chief of police effective Sunday, Aug. 3. He succeeds Major Jamie Brown, who retired Friday, Aug. 1.

Major Behning, a Davenport native, joined the department in 1994. He has served in every division of the DPD, including all three patrol shifts, the Tactical Operations Bureau (TOB), the Training Unit and the Neighborhoods Energized to Succeed Unit (NETS). He has also held the roles of Internal Affairs officer, TOB commander and most recently, Patrol Division commander.

His contributions extend to regional law enforcement, including service with the Quad City Metropolitan Enforcement Group. He retired as commander of the Davenport Police Emergency Services Team after 22 years.

Mr. Behning also served overseas as a tactical commander instructor for the U.S. Department of State’s Anti-Terrorism Assistance Program.

Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards, including the 2012 and 2020 American Legion Post 26 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Awards. In 2021, he received the Davenport Police Department’s highest award, the Medal of Honor, making him the most decorated officer in department history.

Mr. Behning is a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff & Command and holds a management of personal protection degree from National American University’s Henley-Putnam School of Strategic Security.

Outside of his professional life, he and his wife have mentored in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.

For Major Behning, serving the Davenport community through the police department has been more than a job — it’s been his life’s work,” Chief Jeffery Bladel said in a news release. “He’s always looked out for the well-being of our residents and our officers. His steady leadership, experience, and dedication at every level of the department will serve him well in this new role.”

In the release, the new assistant police chief said “I am very excited to continue my service and a family tradition of dedication to the citizens of Davenport in my new role as Assistant Chief. I am also honored and humbled by this opportunity to work alongside Chief Bladel and the dedicated men and women who are the Davenport Police Department as we face the challenges of policing in a complex, modern society.”
