BBBS to send Quad Citians ‘Over The Edge’ for kids

Go Over the Edge this year — or volunteer from the comfort of the ground — and help Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley, BBBSMV, push past $1 million in fundraising for youth mentoring.

On Saturday, Aug. 26, “Edgers” will rappel 140 feet down the 11-story Hotel Blackhawk in downtown Davenport while other volunteers make donations and help out behind-the-scenes from the ground. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Participants may join the Over The Edge for Kids’ Sake event as an individual, duo or group, according to the BBBSMV website

To participate as an Edger, individuals must set a minimum fundraising goal of $1,000; Daring Duos have a minimum target fundraising goal of $1,750; and Fearless Teams (three or more people) must raise a minimum of $2,500 for the first three edgers, and $750 for each additional edger. Registration includes a $100 deposit that is applied to the minimum fundraising goal.

The BBBSMV Over The Edge committee is seeking sponsorships and will offer incentive prizes to help participants raise as much as possible.

In its first five years, Over the Edge has raised more than $800,000, and organizers expect this year’s event to surpass the $1 million milestone, according to the website. Last year, dozens of Edgers raised funds and rappelled from Hotel Blackhawk’s roof for the cause.
