Construction work started today, March 18, on a new roundabout at the foot of the Rock Island Arsenal Bridge that has closed access to both sides of the Government Bridge.
The City of Davenport warned in a news release that construction will close the bridge for about four months – including access to and from Davenport and to and from Rock Island. The new roundabout will replace the antiquated traffic triangle and route traffic in a circle from Government Bridge, 2nd and LeClaire streets, the release said.
Studies also show roundabouts decrease deadly crashes by 90% and lower injury collisions by 76%.
Drivers in Iowa and Illinois who frequent the Arsenal must use an alternate route throughout construction, which is expected to last until July.
The roundabout, which will be installed at the bridge’s entry and exit in Davenport, is being constructed by the Rock Island Arsenal Department of Public Works in cooperation and support of the City of Davenport.
