Artwork submitted by a student from Illinois 17th Congressional District, which includes the Quad Cities, won the 2024 Congressional Art Competition.

Rachel Fry, a senior at Pekin (Illinois) Community High School, submitted artwork entitled “Clownish Tomfoolery.” That work was declared the winner of the student art competition and will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year.

“Young people across Central and Northwestern Illinois are going to be the key to ensuring our neighborhoods are prosperous for generations to come,” said U.S. Rep Eric Sorensen, D-Moline. “It is an honor to host this competition that celebrates the amazing artistic abilities of our high school students. It is my hope that these competitions inspire more students to pursue their passions.”

The art competition began in 1982 and has accepted more than 650,000 pieces of art from high students nationwide. Artwork from each congressional district is selected to be displayed at the U.S. Capitol.

The art competition isn’t the only congressional competition for students. Earlier this year, for example, Moline High School junior Akhil Kumar was the winner of Rep. Sorensen’s 2023 Congressional App Challenge.
