Girl Scouts received $40,000 this summer from the Arconic Foundation for its summer camp at Camp Liberty, a Girl Scout Camp in New Liberty, Iowa, just outside of the Quad Cities.

“Because of passionate funders like Arconic Foundation, girls can continue to learn and grow in nature,” said Diane Nelson, CEO of Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois, in a news release.

“The outdoors continues to be a central focus for Girl Scouts because camp is the perfect classroom.”

At Camp Liberty, campers explore, observe, build, test and navigate while building science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills and others. In addition to traditional summer camp activities, including hiking, swimming and horseback riding, Girl Scouts also learn about environmental science, plant trees on the property, log data for a citizen science project, learn plant identification and identify planets and constellations in the night sky, according to the release.

Funds from the Arconic Foundation, the independently endowed philanthropic arm of Arconic Inc., will help Girl Scouts expand its STEM experiences for girls to continue to learn  and grow in nature. Last year, the foundation awarded a $100,000 grant to Eastern Iowa Community Colleges to create promotional content that showcases advancing manufacturing careers in the Quad Cities.

Camp Liberty’s 245 wooded acres provide a beautiful and safe setting for summer camp, equestrian programs and camping for area Girl Scout troops. Thousands of girls, volunteers and families visit the camp each year to help develop outdoor skills and experience nature, the release states.
