American Power Systems rolls out new RPM alternators line

Names Evans Scholarship winner

American Power Systems, Inc. (APS) has developed a new series of lower turn-on RPM alternators capable of fully charging secondary power banks in less time and even while idling, the Davenport company announced.

“This new line is a game changer for those needing to rapidly boost their secondary power units,” Amy Lank, APS president and CEO said in a news release. “Being able to recharge battery banks from anywhere reduces ‘range anxiety’ drivers feel when their batteries are low, and they aren’t near traditional charging infrastructure.”

“It also means that those types of vehicles become more efficient because they are consuming less fuel and requiring less power from the engine to begin charging,” she added.

The new 130 HPI Series was developed to have a robust lower turn-on RPM, allowing end users to begin charging even at low or idling speeds. By turning on faster, it also means that secondary power systems can gain a full charge in less time than alternators that begin output at a higher RPM.

American Power Systems, headquartered in downtown Davenport, said the new alternators are ideal for use as a secondary alternator for vehicles with onboard lithium battery bank systems needed to power onboard equipment, including:

  • RVs and other vans, particularly those traveling shorter distances between stops or at reduced speeds.
  • Yachts and sailboats, even far from shore.
  • Work trucks with onboard equipment such as lift buckets.
  • Emergency vehicles outfitted with additional electrical equipment such as ambulances and police SUVs.
  • Vehicles performing silent watch or other data collection activities.

Founded in 2006, APS has been designing and manufacturing advanced mobile power systems, alternators, converters, regulators and power generators for armored, security, commercial, marine and purpose-built specialty vehicles like RVs and luxury motor coaches.

Freeman APS scholarship recipient

The Davenport-based manufacturer also recently selected Landen Freeman, a Davenport North High School senior, as the winner of its 2023 Thomas K. Evans Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship is a $5,000 merit- and needs-based one-time gift for new college entrants pursuing education in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Created in 2017 in memory of APS’ founder, Thomas Keenan Evans, the scholarship encourages bright, creative young people to achieve and excel, and to help them change the world for the better.

LANDEN FREEMAN

In 2006, APS was founded by Mr. Evans, a local engineer and entrepreneur. The company designs and manufactures advanced mobile power systems for armored, security, commercial, marine and other purpose-built specialty vehicles.

“Being able to award this scholarship to help the innovators of tomorrow is incredibly meaningful to our company,” said Amy Lank, the company’s president & CEO. “Connecting students with resources through the Thomas K. Evans Memorial Scholarship not only honors the legacy of our company’s founder, but it also demonstrates our commitment to investing in our future talent.”

Mr. Freeman is a member of North’s Green Team, an environmental club that focuses on action and explores the science behind environmental advocacy. He also participates in North’s Science Bowl team, where he was elected team captain for the 2022-23 academic year. He plans to attend Mount Mercy University in the fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and environmental science followed by graduate studies in math and environmental law.

“STEM offers me many opportunities to reach a deeper understanding of the world around me,” the high school senior wrote in his application essay. “I can ask an infinite amount of questions and still never know everything. That excites me! With STEM, I can also begin to answer many of those questions. It’s a beautiful cycle of learning and discovery that I have fallen in love with. STEM is the conduit by which I am going to change the world.”

Mr. Freeman also participates in the Junior Optimists International (JOI) Club, and on the student council, serving as a liaison between North High School and the Davenport Community School District board as a student representative.
