Illinois State Sen. Mike Halpin’s measure to create specialty Air Force license plates was signed into law on Friday, July 19.

“We’re bringing parity to Air Force veterans, as these specialty plates exist for everyone else,” Sen. Halpin, D-Rock Island, said in a news release. “This is a small way to show our gratitude for those who protect our country.”
Currently, that is the only branch of the military that does not have a license plate for combat veterans. The Illinois Secretary of State is authorized to issue Combat Action Ribbon license plates to members of the Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps, and Combat Action Badge license plates to special groups within the Army.
Under Mr. Halpin’s measure, the Illinois Secretary of State can issue Air Force Combat Action Medal license plates to Air Force veterans who were awarded the Air Force Combat Action Medal. House Bill 4108 takes effect Jan. 1, 2025.
“My office is proud to help recognize and honor these distinguished Air Force veterans for their service and sacrifice,” Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said in the release. “I appreciate Sen. Halpin for his efforts in commemorating those Illinois airmen who devoted their lives to serving our country. Their legacy, courage and dedication will not be forgotten.”
