In the mood for a meal of butter chicken, lamb saag, madras chicken curry or paneer butter masal?Foodies who enjoy those Indian dishes and more have a new restaurant to visit. Desi Monk’s Indian Kitchen opened at 2307 Cumberland Square Drive, Bettendorf. (The new restaurant is next door to the Ultimate Chocolates shop, across the street from the Family Museum and near the Goodwill store.)The new restaurant opened Saturday, June 21. It is owned by the husband-wife team of Venkatesh Sadineni and Siri Chandana Nimmagadda.“People have been saying good things about the food here,” said Ms. Nimmagadda, during the restaurant’s grand opening ceremony Thursday, July 3.

That event included a Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting ceremony that attracted about 20 people from the business community.During the ceremony, Bettendorf Mayor Bob Gallagher thanked the couple for opening their new business in the community.“It’s important for all of us to be here today to say ‘Thank you.’ … I looked at the menu and we are learning new words and new spices,” Mr. Gallagher said during the brief ceremony.Since the restaurant opened a couple of weeks ago, it has been getting great comments and reviews from its new customers, Ms. Nimmagadda added.“At Desi Monk’s, we’re bringing the bold, authentic flavors of Indian to the heart of Iowa. … Our chefs come from across India, offering everything from smoky Tandoor dishes and authentic biryani to creamy curries and cool mango lassi, all paired with fresh naan from our in-house Tandoor oven,” according to information from the restaurant’s website.Some of the items on the menu include:
Madras chicken curry: A popular Indian curry known for its bold, spicy and tangy flavors.
Chicken chettinad: South Indian style chicken cooked with roasted spices.
Butter chicken: Tender chicken in a rich, buttery tomato gravy.
Lamb saag: Lamb simmered in a spiced gravy.
Saag paneer: Spinach-based curry cooked with paneer cubes.
The new restaurant, which has about four employees, has been in the works for the past few months.Desi Monk’s leaders have been telling its fans about the “culinary journey” to open the new restaurant for the past several weeks on the restaurant’s Facebook page.Its hours are: Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4:30-10 p.m.; and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4:30-9 p.m. It is closed on Tuesdays.
