Amazon has started to build a second facility in Davenport. That facility will be a 114,000-square-foot “last-mile delivery station” located near the current Amazon Robotics Fulfillment Center at 2022 Research Parkway, according to company officials.
The new facility is scheduled to be complete by the end of this year.
The “last mile” facility will join Amazon’s Fulfillment Center in Davenport, which opened in October 2023 and employs approximately 2,000 people. The current facility features the latest generation of Amazon robotics, with more than 5,000 robots helping move products through the 2.3 million-square-foot building and fulfilling about 130,000 customer orders daily.
The new delivery facility generally creates more than 100 direct and indirect job opportunities, including driver opportunities through the Delivery Service Partner (DSP) and Amazon Flex programs, while serving thousands of customers throughout Scott County and beyond, according to information released by Amazon leaders. The City of Davenport and Quad Cities Chamber jointly announced the expansion in a news release today, May 20.
According to Amazon, the delivery station will power the last mile of Amazon’s order process and help speed up deliveries. Packages will be shipped to the delivery station from neighboring Amazon Fulfillment and Centers and then loaded into delivery trucks to be distributed to customers.
The City of Davenport also announced the new Amazon facility on its Facebook page this morning.
Amazon’s plans to build the new delivery station does not require Davenport City Council action, Denise Hnytka, chief communications officer for the city, told the Quad Cities Regional Business Journal in an email today.
In the past few weeks, Amazon has announced other new delivery stations are in the works in Florida, Texas and other parts of the country.
Plans for the QC-based delivery station are in the early stages, with construction just underway and anticipated completion in a few months. Amazon’s U.S. customer fulfillment and transportation employees earn an average of more than $22 per hour.
“Hiring will happen later this year as we ramp up operations toward opening,” said Andy DiOrio, Amazon regional public relations lead, in an email message to the QCBJ on Tuesday.
He added that Ryan Companies is the general contractor for the project.
The new facility will bring even faster delivery for customers throughout the region, including the Quad Cities’ neighboring rural communities, Amazon said.
“The City is happy to see Amazon grow its footprint in Davenport’s Eastern Iowa Industrial Center,” Davenport Mayor Mike Matson said in the release. “We’re grateful Amazon chose to do business here, and we’re proud of the Davenport community for supporting this expansion.”
Jason Vangalis, Amazon’s economic development manager, added: “Opening our second Davenport site in three years and our sixth in the past two years across Iowa is a testament to expanding the great communities we serve and the new jobs we’re bringing across the region. Davenport’s strategic Midwest location with direct access to major highways and talented workforce also played a key role in this area’s expansion.”
In the release, the chamber’s President and CEO Peter Tokar III said “We are thrilled that Amazon has chosen to expand at their current campus in Davenport. The expansion will bring new jobs as Amazon continues to serve the Quad Cities area and beyond.”
