Health care professionals in the Quad Cities recognized three area residents who have overcome heart health issues.
Those patients were honored Wednesday, April 9, during the Pritikin Intensive Cardiac Rehab 2024 Patients of the Year ceremony at Trinity Heart Center, Rock Island. The third annual awards celebration recognized individuals for their amazing progress in rehabilitation and healthy heart habits after suffering a heart event, according to information from UnityPoint Health.
UnityPoint Health – Trinity honored these patients for their hard work, determination and commitment to heart health:
- Rick Johnson, of Coal Valley, was just a month into retirement when he suffered a heart attack at home. After undergoing surgery and receiving two stents, his cardiologist referred him to the Pritikin program at Trinity Heart Center for rehabilitation. Mr. Johnson said the structured, monitored exercise gave him confidence as he navigated recovery. “I thought it was critical to be in a program where you’re monitored,” he said. “The nutrition education, eating right and getting back in shape helped me return to the activities I enjoy in retirement.” Since joining the program, Mr. Johnson has made significant dietary changes, focusing on portion control and incorporating more lean proteins, fruits and vegetables. “It’s not a diet – it’s a lifestyle change,” he said. “It makes you more mindful of what you’re putting in your body.” He has lost 45 pounds and continues to see improvements in his energy and endurance.
- Tim Long, of Rock Island, underwent open heart surgery in August 2024 to replace an aortic valve. While he had heard of the Pritikin program, he didn’t fully realize its life-changing potential until experiencing it firsthand. “The nutrition education was eye-opening,” said Mr. Long. “My partner and I have completely embraced the Pritikin cookbook and guidebook. The integration of healthy eating into the entire rehab process is remarkable.” As a lifelong cyclist, he was eager to get back on his bike. The monitored exercise sessions gave him the confidence to push himself safely. “The staff listened to my goals and supported me every step of the way,” he said. “Being in rehab long enough to understand how my body was responding gave me the assurance I needed to get back out there.”
- Sandy Mahon, of Coal Valley, had open-heart surgery to repair a leaking valve, and was referred to the Pritikin program. She found great success in the exercise portion, increasing her performance level by 51% from her first session. Ms. Mahon, who enjoys gardening and walking outdoors, was determined to maintain an active lifestyle. “The rehab staff here at Trinity Heart Center understand how to safely push you to improve. Having that support and monitoring gave me the confidence to keep going.” Since completing the program, she has remained committed to exercise and continues to prepare heart-healthy meals using Pritikin recipes. She’s also shared what she’s learned with her family, hoping to inspire healthier choices in their daily lives.
“Beyond the walls of cardiac rehab, patients emerge stronger and healthier, equipped with the knowledge and determination to take control of their health,” said Merritt Adams, cardiac/pulmonary rehabilitation manager at UnityPoint Health – Trinity. “Every person who walks through our doors is an inspiration, offering hope to others who may be unsure of where
to start after a heart-health scare. We are here to guide and support each individual as they take the steps to strengthen their heart, body, and mind.”
Trinity Heart Center was the first Pritikin program in the Quad Cities and among six in Illinois.
Pritikin takes a proactive approach to heart disease prevention and treatment, focusing on a heart-healthy diet, regular exercise and a positive mindset. Participants engage in exercise sessions while also receiving valuable resources, including cooking schools, live nutrition workshops at the state-of-the-art Cardiac Nutrition Center and mindset training.
“The journey through cardiac rehab is a testament to the strength and determination of those who refuse to let heart disease define them,” says Kathy Pulley, director of cardiology services at UnityPoint Health – Trinity Heart Center. “Graduation from the program is not just a milestone; it’s a declaration of their commitment to living a healthier life. We are honored to be part of that journey.”
