Quad Cities families and children can celebrate a Bless the Block party and backpack giveaway from 5:30-8:30 p.m, Monday, Aug. 12, at the Esperanza Center, 335 5th Ave., Moline.
The event is hosted by Argrow’s House, Modern Woodmen of America and Grace City Church.
More than 250 backpacks loaded with free school supplies will be given out at the fifth annual back-to-school party. In addition to those free backpacks and supplies, the Bless the Block party includes food, face painting, a bounce house, playground, games and more.
The annual party is organized by Grace City Church, a nondenominational church in Rock Island working to restore lives and rebuild communities, and Argrow’s House of Healing and Hope, a healing house that offers free services for survivors of domestic violence and abuse. Argrow’s House is also a social enterprise that hires survivors to create bath and body products that are sold online and in stores.
Modern Woodmen of America also is a lead organizer and sponsor. The fraternal financial services organization built to help families throughout life is headquartered in Rock Island.
Taking burden off families
“Every child deserves to be celebrated and to have the resources they need when school starts,” Kit Evans-Ford, founder and executive director of Argrow’s House, said in a news release. “This event will get Quad City kids excited about the school year and will supply them with what they need to be successful. Kids will receive school supplies and a backpack, which can be expensive, especially for families with multiple children. We hope to take that burden off of families.”
Last year, 175 backpacks were given away. Organizers aim to increase that number and give away 250 backpacks stuffed with supplies on Aug. 12. Donations have been collected from Modern Woodmen of America, community members and organizations throughout the Quad Cities.
All are welcome at the Bless the Block Backpack Event, regardless of where they live or their age, the news release said. In fact, volunteers and organizers have backpacks filled with supplies ready for nontraditional, adult students as well.
“Everyone is invited to attend,” Ms. Ford added. “Traditional students, non-traditional students, families … come grab a backpack, get something to eat, play games, and meet others. This event is about blessing not just the block but the whole community. It will be a joyful time.”
