The Iowa Public Transit Association (IPTA) has chosen Bettendorf Transit driver Karen Carsell-Laake as one of its 2024 Professional Drivers of the Year.

Ms. Carsell-Laake was nominated for this major state honor by the city’s Public Works Director Brian Schmidt and Transit Operations Manager Austin Whelan.

“Karen was one of 12 drivers across the State of Iowa to be recognized by IPTA for this award,” Mr. Whelan said. “As a 33-plus year employee of our Transit Division, there is no doubt that Karen is dedicated to serving Bettendorf citizens. I can’t think of a better representative from the city to have received this award.”

To be eligible for a Drivers of the Year award, the IPTA sets the following criteria: a clean work record; no attendance violations; an excellent safety record; and worked at least 780 hours in the past 12 months.

The Bettendorf Transit Division reviewed the criteria, along with feedback from other city staff, passenger compliments received, and contributions to creating an inclusive and positive workplace experience and nominated Ms. Carsell-Laake for her outstanding work in all of the eligibility criteria categories.

“Karen is a great representative for Bettendorf Transit as she cares deeply about the needs and safety of her passengers and fellow drivers,” Mayor Bob Gallagher said while recognizing Karen during the city council’s regular meeting on July 2.
